When I began to study Japanese in September last year, I could not imagine that I would now be able to speak Japanese. The road to learning Japanese was long and difficult, but exciting and enjoyable. Thanks to Gifu University’s summer school program, I learned a lot, enjoyed various activities and made many friends. The environment provided by a summer school or the like is perfect to learn a new language. Since tutors are always around to help, students can learn and practice Japanese a lot to interact better with their new friends.
I learned a lot and participated in many activities during the summer school program this year. I am grateful to our instructors for earnestly helping us learn the Japanese culture and language. I learned many useful grammar rules in class and practiced Japanese seriously. I talked with tutors and Korean students every day, learning new words and how to use them. I learned the Japanese culture and language from tutors, and participated in festivals and parties. We had fun together, cooking and holding parties at our dormitory. The summer school was an amazing experience.
I enjoyed a lot of activities—participating in a variety of excursions and festivals. Of all the excursions, the one to Gujo was the most enjoyable. During my stay in Gujo, I visited an elementary school, chatted with pupils and performed magic tricks for them. It was a truly enjoyable experience. When I first met my host family, I was happy, but a little nervous. But they were very kind and I enjoyed staying with them.
I have totally changed my mind—before the summer school program began, I did not think I would like to study abroad for a year, but now I want to study in Japan again for a year in the future. Since I would like to be able to speak Japanese much better than now, I may work in Japan in the future.
I knew very little about Japan before the summer school program began. During the program, I learned firsthand about Japan and its culture. Now I like Japan very much, and wish to learn more about it in the future. I would like to work in Japan or find a job in a company connected with a Japanese company.
Of all the activities during the program, a three-day stay program in Gujo is the most memorable. I went to see Gujo-odori dance performance and enjoyed making food models, for which Gujo is famous. I enjoyed learning various aspects of the Japanese culture by taking shodo (Japanese calligraphy), chado (Japanese tea ceremony) and kendo (Japanese fencing) lessons. I also enjoyed learning Gujo dialect from my host family. They were all kind to me and I was glad that they treated me as a family member. It was a short, but memorable stay.
Tutors supported students during the summer school program. They helped Swedish and Korean students adapt well to a new environment to enjoy their everyday lives. We enjoyed cooking Japanese dishes and having meals in a dining hall together with our tutors. I am happy to have made not only Japanese friends but also Swedish friends through this Japanese language training program.
