Molecular Translation of Sugar Chain-Related Life Processes
Sugars (carbohydrates) are known as a vital energy source for sustaining life. However, currently in life science, it has recently become evident that carbohydrates provide each and every cell with their own qualities and functions. You could say that carbohydrates act like the face and the limb of the cell, playing an important role as it interact with its peers in "cellular society". For example, dynamic events such as fertilization, neural development, immunity, cancer metastasis and virus infection are all stages for carbohydrates activity. We aim to understand the workings of carbohydrates-related physiological processes in terms of linguistic unitsiso-called molecular translationjby providing new synthetic technology for various sugar chains and their molecular-biological probes.
