Investigating Carcinogenic Mechanisms Using Genetically Modified Animals
While new infectious diseases such as AIDS, prions, and SARS are gaining much attention, "malignant neoplasms", or simply, "cancer" maintains its rank as the number one cause of death in Japan. Along with the fast pace of scientific research, there have been many new technologic advances in the field of cancer research. However, due to the fact that cancer occurs within a living organism, there has been no change in the vital importance of basic animal experimentation. In addition, in recent years, animal experimentation itself has diversified thanks to amazing developments in molecular biology. Experiments with genetically modified animals have become commonplace, providing volumes of useful data in cancer research. I myself conduct experiments using genetically modified animals with the hope of helping to shed light on carcinogenic mechanisms. Akihiro HIRATA, Assistant Professor
