Japanese Society and Culture Program

Gifu University International Student Center started a new program called “Japanese Society and Culture Program” in April 2007. This program is introduced for students from our sister universities who wish to study Japanese language and culture intensively at Gifu University. It will help enlighten students on the significant aspects of Japanese society and culture. Additionally, “Easy steps to Japanese Culture” is also offered to understand Japanese traditional culture through practical experiences.

The program consists of two steps and each step is divided into two courses.

Step 1: Cross-Cultural Understanding

1. Cross-Cultural Understanding Course 1 & 2

This course primarily aims at assisting foreign students in Japanese society to understand the background of their own languages and cultures and also to recognize cultural variations among different countries through a variety of experiences of interacting with people from different cultures. This course offers some classes that allow both Japanese and foreign students to study together in a very conducive atmosphere. For example, in “Cross-Cultural Understanding Workshop”, students from various backgrounds will have excellent opportunities to communicate and also deepen their cultural understanding towards each other. In “Discover Japan Project”, each student will “discover” his/her own image of Japan and make a presentation based on the discovery.

Step 2: Japanese Culture Understanding

1. Introduction to Japanese Culture Course

This course aims at educating foreign students to understand Japanese traditional culture and language based on the understanding of their own languages and cultures. Students will learn advanced Japanese language which will facilitate their understanding of basic Japanese traditional culture. In this course, students from different countries will utilize Japanese language as a common language. They will learn about the diversities of world cultures. This course also takes 15 weeks, and the students who successfully complete the course will be given a certificate.

2. Japanese Society and Culture Course

This course aims to train students to be human bridges between their own countries and Japan. Through this course students will be able to speak fluently in Japanese language and deepen their understanding towards their own countries and Japan. The classes are on Japanese history, culture, literature and contemporary Japanese society. Examples of classes to be delivered are: “Contemporary Japanese Culture”, “Japanese Speech and Expression”, “Japanese Speech and Thought” and so on. Students will also have discussions with Japanese students in “Cross-Cultural Communication”. This course takes 15 weeks and the students who successfully complete the course will be issued with a certificate.
