Graduate Programs
It is advisable that you contact/consult the supervisor of the course of your interest before submitting the application form as you need to write a research proposal for both Master's or Doctoral programs. Please read more information on the research areas of each researcher in their respective departments and you can start contacting him/her through their emails.
The Master's Degree Program
A master's degree is awarded to those who successfully complete two years of required course work and research, pass the final comprehensive examination, and have their thesis accepted.
Admission Requirements
To enroll as a graduate student in the master's program, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- You have graduated from a university/college and obtained a bachelor's degree in Japan.
- You have completed a 16-year course of school education overseas.
- You have completed a 16-year course of school education overseas offered by correspondence by a foreign institution in Japan, or expect to pass such a course by March 31 of the year of application.
- You have completed a 15-year course of school education overseas whose credits and grades are recognized as outstanding by the graduate school of Engineering of Gifu University.
- You have been recognized by the graduate school of Engineering as being of academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates and moreover have reached 22 years of age.
- You have been evaluated by the school as having academic capability equivalent or superior to that of university graduates.
Application Procedure and Entrance Examination
Applicants must take the entrance examination administered by the graduate school. The entrance examination for international students is given twice every year. First intake's entrance examination will normally be conducted in end of August while the second intake's takes place in January. Please obtain the application form from the graduate school in which you are interested in. Detailed information on the application procedure and entrance examination is given in the form. According to the procedure described in the form, the applicant should submit the necessary forms to the Nyushi-kakari (Admission Division) of the graduate school. Most international graduate students at our university start their study as research students, where they prepare for the Graduate Entrance Examination for six months to one year before being admitted as graduate students.
The Doctoral Degree Program
A doctoral degree is awarded to those who successfully complete three years of required course work and research, pass the final comprehensive examination, and have their thesis accepted.
Admission Requirements
If you wish to enroll as a graduate student in the doctoral program, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- You have obtained a master's degree in Japan.
- You have been awarded a degree equivalent or superior to a master's degree by an overseas educational institution.
- You have a degree equivalent to a master's degree earned via correspondence education offered by an overseas educational institution in Japan.
- You have been recognized by the graduate school as being of academic ability equivalent or superior to those who have a master's degree.
- You were assigned by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

First intake's entrance examination will normally be conducted in end of August while the second intake's takes place in January. Please obtain the application form from the graduate school.
