About Gifu City

Although it is the capital of Gifu Prefecture, Gifu is blessed with the natural beauty of high mountains and clear rivers; the Nagara River running through the center of the city has clear water, and Mt. Kinka is rich in greenery.
Gifu has played an important role in Japan's history because of its location in the middle of the country. During the Sengoku period (Warring States period), various warlords, including Oda Nobunaga (the first of the three great military leaders of the late 16th/early 17th century who united Japan after a century of civil war), used the area as a base in an attempt to unify and control Japan.
The city's most prominent building, Gifu Castle, had actually disappeared from existence for over 350 years before being rebuilt in 1954. Sitting upon the top of the 329 meters high Mt. Kinka, the first castle is believed to have been built way back in 1201.
Currently, Gifu city has a population of about 420 thousands residents and a total area of about 200 km2.
