Accommodation
International House of Gifu University
Gifu University provides a total of 90 rooms (69 single, 14 couple and 7 family rooms) for international students and foreign researchers. The application can be made before or after coming to Japan through the Graduate School office. Applications for the April and October intakes are open in January and July, respectively. The monthly rental fee varies between approx. 5,000 to 19,000 yen depending on the type of the room.

Kurono Dormitory
This dormitory is open to undergraduate students, both Japanese and foreigners, and it has a conversation room, a multi-purpose room, a kitchen and a laundry room. Application is made at the Welfare Division of the Student Affairs Bureau of Gifu University (Tel: +81-58-293-2149).

Public housing or apartments
The Gifu City or Gifu Prefecture also offers relatively low cost housing for international students living in Gifu. Applications are accepted monthly when the vacancies are available. For lottery houses, the lotteries are drawn in January, April, July and October; Application deadlines are the last day of each preceding month.
Medical Care
National Health Insurance
International students staying in Japan for one year or longer should enroll in the National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) program provided by the Japanese Government. With this insurance, you are entitled to a 70% discount on the necessary medical expenses.

Disaster and Accident Insurance for Students
Disaster and Accident Insurance for Students (Gakkensai, in Japanese) covers the medical expenses for the injuries caused by unexpected disasters or accidents during lectures and research activities. Every student is recommended to join it since the premiums are not high.

Medical Fees Reimbursement
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) can reimburse at most 80% of the medical expenses which international students paid. Reimbursement, however, is available only for treatments covered by National Health Insurance. Moreover, some medical expenses, such as car accident injuries, are beyond the reimbursement.
Part-time Job
As an education and research institution, we do not recommend students to support themselves through part-time employments. However, foreign students are allowed to work part-timely provided they have obtained the necessary permission from the Japan Immigration office. Regular students (undergraduate and graduate) are allowed to work up to 28 hours per week, and non-regular students (such as research students or exchange students) are allowed to work up to 14 hours per week. It is also eligible to work up to 8 hours per day during extended vacations such as summer holidays.
