'What Japan needs more than anything else is engineering technology'

 It has been mentioned that Japan, in particular, has been strongly affected by the current global economic slump. With very little energy resources, Japan depends on the import of energy for our sustenance. Although the Japanese government had been trying to reform this condition, our reliance on energy import has not improved at all. Thus Japan has continued the cycle of utilizing the imported energy and resources in order to manufacture highly value-added products for export. That is the fate of this nation. While most of the exported goods are mainly industrial products, it is crucial for Japan to be in the forefront of technological innovation; otherwise, we cannot continue to maintain the level of energy import as we have been doing until now.
With this in mind, the Faculty of Engineering, Gifu University, which is located in the Tokai region, the heartland of Japan's industrial manufacturing sector, aims to foster graduate students who can contribute to Japan's future technological competitiveness by laying the foundations for locally-based manufacturing technologies. We offer an environment for our graduate students to pursue their studies and research on the needs of this country in their respective departments and field of expertise, and in collaboration with such graduates, research divisions such as the Environmental and Renewable Energy Systems division, the Center for Advanced Die Engineering and Technology, the Center of Innovative Photovoltaic Systems, the Center for Infrastructure Asset Management Technology and Research, Center for Advanced Drug Research, and so on, have been established. Contributing to society is our most important mission.
