Admission policy for Undergraduated Programs
  • Educational philosophy and objectives
The Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences educates students in the principles of biology and life sciences and trains them to develop related technologies and apply their accomplishments to biology-related industries.

  • Desirable applicants
We seek students who are willing to pursue such objectives as securing a stable and safe supply of food, development of highly functional foods for promotion of health, restoration and preservation of natural ecosystems and the environment in which we live, and promotion of the health and welfare of humans and animals. Selection is based on an entrance examination system that evaluates basic scholarship, application ability, logic, and character including sensibility, ability to cooperate, and willingness to learn.

The selection method

  • Selection for general admission
    1. Examination for entrance in the spring
This examination selects students with high overall academic ability, and is suited for applicants who have studied a wide range of material. It includes an individual achievement test in addition to the National Center Test for University Admissions, and stresses science and mathematics.

    2. Examination for entrance in the fall
This examination is for entrance to the Food and Life Science and the Agricultural and Environmental Science courses. It selects students with high overall academic ability and is suited for applicants who have studied a wide range of material, particularly those with academic ability and interest in the sciences. It includes an individual achievement test in addition to the National Center Test for University Admissions. For the individual achievement test, applicants must compose a short essay to show knowledge of the natural sciences and ability to think logically.

  • Special Selection
    1. Recommendation System I (Selection independent of the National Center Test for University Admissions)
This system is conducted by the Agricultural and Environmental Science Course. Selection is based on comprehensive review of letters of recommendation, personal statement, dossier, short essay, and interview. Successful applicants wish to deepen knowledge gained through career-oriented training in high school and have a strong ambition to acquire sophisticated skills and expertise in areas such as production and utilization of bio-resources, preservation of ecosystems and the global environment, and leadership in regional agriculture.

    2. Recommendation System II ( National Center Test for University Admissions requisite for selection)
This system is conducted by the Food and Life Science Course, the Agricultural and Environmental Science Course, and the Veterinary Medicine Course. Selection is based on comprehensive review of personal statement, short essay, interview, and the National Center Test for University Admissions. Successful applicants have achieved outstanding scholastic performance in high school or have excelled in a particular subject (mathematics, science, or English), and desire to acquire sophisticated skills and expertise and contribute to the regional community.

    3. Special considerations for (Japanese) applicants who have lived abroad
Selection is based on comprehensive review of letters of recommendation, personal statement, academic transcripts, health certificate, interview, and short essay. In addition to fundamental academic ability, successful applicants have sufficient mastery of the Japanese language for daily living, an interest in the contents of the desired course, and can continue to advance their studies with motivation after entrance into the university.

    4. Special considerations for self-supporting international applicants
Selection for admission to either of the Food and Life Science Course or the Agricultural and Environmental Science Course is conducted from a viewpoint of promoting international exchange and is based on comprehensive review of EJU and TOEFL scores, as well as a health examination. Applicants to the Veterinary Medicine Course must achieve certain EJU scores, and are then selected based on comprehensive review of an interview, scholastic achievements (in biology), and health examination.

  • Transfer students

Successful applicants for transfer as third-year students into the Food and Life Science and the Agricultural and Environmental Science Courses excel in fundamental academic ability, ambition, and character, make use of experiences and views that differ from students admitted in their first year, and have a clear sense of purpose and desire to learn. Selection is conducted through a short essay and interview, and is based on character and fundamental academic ability in the pertinent field.
